The lingering summer heat is strong in the Iwate coastal region. In this hot weather, local staff and volunteers from across the country are actively serving at various projects. Ice shavings are still very popular! Paula Chen sensei, who has diligently served in Ofunato and helped start the base there, will complete her missions and go back to Tokyo soon. We are sad, but also thankful for all she has done!
The “Obon” summer holiday period, when activities slowed down, is now over (the summer school holidays have also ended in Iwate), and our support activities are back to full operation mode. We are very thankful for many volunteers who have come to serve with us at various locations in the still-hot weather.
On August 10 (Friday), an open house of “Grace House” Ofunato base was held with many visitors, including people from neighboring communities, friends we met through relief activities, and our supporters. A listener of an FM radio program, in which our workers (one of them plays the harp) were featured, contacted us and it was agreed to hold a harp concert in Rikuzentakata. Our support activities continue to be carried out by many volunteers at various locations this week (except in Miyako, where workers are taking a break). Being in the middle of summer vacation season, many volunteers have come to Iwate and are presently helping in different communities. We are thankful that more and more people are coming to serve with us! The Grace House, a base in Ofunato, is finally scheduled to open on the 10th (Friday).
